Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

  • Chronic neuroimmunologic disorder of the central nervous system (CNS) in which the immune system attacks the myelin sheaths that cover nerve fibers and inhibit communication between the CSN and the rest of the body

  • Cause is unknown but appears to be affected by both genetic and environmental factors

  • Affects an estimated 2.5 million people worldwide and between 300,000-500,000 people in the US

    • ​Females are twice as likely to develop MS, which is often diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50​
  • Signs and symptoms vary depending on which nerves are affected and the extent of the damage
    • Pain​, numbness, and tingling

    • Tremors

    • Ambulation difficulties

    • Paralysis

    • Slurred speech

    • Fatigue

  • Disease often follows a relapsing-remitting course, with periods of symptoms followed by periods of remission

  • No cure exists but there are treatments for:

    • MS attacks​

      • Corticosteroids​

      • Plasma exchange

    • Modifying disease progression

      • Various medications​

    • Managing signs and symptoms

      • Physical therapy​

      • Medications

      • Lifestyle modifications
