The purpose of NORD Students for Rare at UMNTC is to reach the next generation of professionals, advocates, researchers, and medical professionals. Our group will spread awareness and recognition of rare diseases, establish professional relationships and partnerships, and pursue future opportunities related to rare diseases.
In medicine, zebras are a symbol for rare diseases or conditions. Students are taught that "When you hear hoofbeats, look for horses, not zebras."
A key message of NORD is that when you hear hoofbeats, it isn't always a horse.
Sometimes it's a zebra.
The National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) is "a patient advocacy organization dedicated to individuals with rare diseases and the organizations that serve them."

NORD Students for Rare at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities is affiliated with the National Organization of Rare Disorders as a Students for Rare Chapter.
The Students for Rare program "unites students of all disciplines to use their skills to improve the lives of rare disease patients."
